Paul ends his prayer for the Ephesians with an outburst of praise. He has just prayed that they would be strengthened with power through the Spirit, rooted in Christ’s love, and filled with the fullness of God. Then he reminds them of the limitless God they serve: the One who can do far more abundantly than anything we could imagine.
The Greek word Paul uses for “far more abundantly” (hyperekperissou) is one of his strongest superlatives. It means exceedingly, beyond all measure, infinitely more. Paul stacks words together to emphasize God’s ability to surpass every human expectation. And notice the key: this is not distant power it is “the power at work within us.” The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in us, empowering us daily.
How does this connect with health and holiness? Often, we feel our limitations. We want to live healthier, break free from harmful habits, or grow in discipline, but our strength runs out. We set goals and fall short. We pray for healing or transformation and wonder if it’s possible. Ephesians 3:20 reminds us: it’s not about our limited power, but God’s unlimited power at work within us.
Think of the struggles Paul himself endured—weakness, sickness, hardship, opposition. Yet he testified: “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:13). God’s power is not abstract; it is real, present, and active in the believer’s life. It is strong enough to renew our bodies, transform our habits, and give us endurance when we feel like giving up.
This doesn’t mean God will always remove every struggle or instantly change every circumstance. But it does mean He can take our small offerings our efforts to care for our bodies, to walk in holiness, to choose wisely and multiply them beyond what we imagine. He can bring healing where we see brokenness, strength where we see weakness, and peace where we see turmoil.
For modern Christians, this verse is a call to hope. Don’t limit God to what you think is possible. Don’t let past failures define your future. Trust that He is able to do far more than you could ask or even imagine. Surrender your health, your body, and your spiritual journey to Him, and invite His Spirit to work within you. You may be surprised at how He exceeds your expectations.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that You are able to do far more abundantly than I could ever ask or think. Help me to trust Your power at work within me, especially in the areas where I feel weak. Strengthen me in body and spirit so that my life may glorify You. Amen.
