Sowing to the Spirit

Reading Time: 2 minutes
“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Paul’s words in Galatians 6 are simple, yet sobering: life is a field, and every choice is a seed. What we sow today, we will reap tomorrow. This principle touches every area of life: spiritual, moral, relational, and physical.

The Greek word for “mocked” (muktērizetai) literally means “to turn up the nose at.” Paul warns that no one can dismiss God’s order of sowing and reaping. The choices we make cannot be bypassed or ignored. To sow to the flesh living for selfish cravings, sinful desires, or indulgent habits will always result in corruption (decay, ruin). But to sow to the Spirit, living by God’s Word, guided by the Spirit will result in eternal life.

This principle ties directly into the biblical health message. Every health choice we make is a seed. Overeating, neglecting rest, or harmful substances may not show consequences right away, but over time they reap corruption, disease, weakness, and loss of vitality. On the other hand, daily choices to eat wisely, exercise self-control, rest well, and care for the body as God’s temple are seeds that reap strength, energy, and the ability to serve others.

Paul’s encouragement is realistic: “Let us not grow weary of doing good.” Why? Because sowing takes effort, and reaping takes time. Farmers don’t plant seeds and see fruit the next morning. In the same way, healthy living and holy living require perseverance. The results may seem slow, but God promises: “In due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Think of Daniel and his friends in Babylon (Daniel 1). Their simple choice to honor God with their diet looked small at first, but it was a seed of faith. In time, it bore fruit in wisdom, health, and influence. Likewise, every choice you make today, choosing prayer over distraction, water over soda, kindness over bitterness is a seed that will grow into fruit tomorrow.

For the modern Christian, this passage is both a warning and an encouragement. The warning: don’t sow to the flesh, thinking you can escape the harvest. Sin and unhealthy habits always bear fruit in time. The encouragement: keep sowing to the Spirit, even when it feels slow or unseen. God sees, and in due season you will reap a harvest of life, health, and joy.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the reminder that every choice I make is a seed. Help me to sow to the Spirit daily in my habits, health, and holiness so that I may reap a harvest that glorifies You. Give me strength not to grow weary, and faith to trust Your timing. Amen.
