Paul reminds us here that the Bible isn’t just a record of ancient history—it is a living source of encouragement. The stories, promises, and truths written long ago were preserved for us today, so that when we face trials, we can find strength and comfort in God’s Word.

The phrase “the encouragement of the Scriptures” is powerful. The Greek word for encouragement is paraklēsis—the same root used for “comfort” throughout the New Testament. In other words, the Scriptures are one of the primary ways God brings comfort to His people.

When we are sick, weary, or burdened, the Bible speaks words of life that steady us.

In grief, the Psalms remind us that God is close to the brokenhearted (Ps. 34:18).

In fear, God’s Word tells us He is our refuge and strength (Ps. 46:1).

In weakness, we are reminded that His grace is sufficient (2 Cor. 12:9).

In confusion, His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Ps. 119:105).

This is central to the biblical health journey. Doctors may prescribe medicine for the body, but Scripture is medicine for the soul. It encourages us to endure, strengthens us in weakness, and keeps our eyes fixed on eternal hope. Without it, suffering can feel meaningless; with it, we see God’s hand, His promises, and His purposes—even in the darkest valleys.

The comfort we receive is meant to be shared. One of the most powerful ministries you can have is simply speaking Scripture into someone’s trial. A single verse, given at the right time, can lift despair, calm fear, and spark hope. When you share God’s Word, you’re not just offering your opinion—you’re passing on the very comfort of God.

So don’t underestimate the power of opening your Bible in the middle of affliction. The Spirit uses those words to breathe encouragement and endurance into your heart. And as He comforts you, He equips you to comfort others with the same hope-filled Scriptures.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the comfort of Your Word. Teach me to turn to Scripture in times of trial and to find encouragement there. Let Your promises give me hope, and help me share that hope with others who need to hear Your truth. Amen.
