This psalm begins with a declaration, not a question: God is our refuge and strength. Not might be, not was, not could become—He is. Right now.
The psalmist describes Him in three ways:
- Refuge — a safe place of shelter from danger. In storms, battles, or disasters, God Himself is the place we run to.
- Strength — He doesn’t just protect us; He empowers us. His strength becomes ours when we feel weak.
- Very present help — not distant, not delayed. God is immediately available in the moment of trouble.
Then comes the bold response: “Therefore we will not fear…” Even if the most unshakable parts of creation—earth and mountains—collapse into chaos, God’s presence remains. The world may shake, but those rooted in Him do not.
Applied to biblical health, this truth is vital. We live in times of uncertainty: sickness, natural disasters, instability in economies and systems. Fear is a natural response—but God calls us to a supernatural response: do not fear. Why? Because our refuge and strength is not in what can be shaken—it is in the unshakable presence of God.
Thriving, then, doesn’t mean avoiding all trouble—it means knowing where to run in trouble. When life feels unstable, you can find safety, strength, and peace in God Himself. His presence is your protection. His strength is your supply. His help is your immediate rescue.
So whatever storms come—whether sickness, fear, or instability—you can thrive, not because circumstances are secure, but because your Refuge never fails.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that You are my refuge, my strength, and my very present help in trouble. When life shakes around me, keep me steady in Your presence. Help me to reject fear and to thrive in the safety of Your unshakable love. Amen.
