All Things for Good

Reading Time: 2 minutes
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

~ Romans 8:28

Few verses have brought as much comfort to believers as Romans 8:28. Paul writes with assurance: “we know.” This isn’t wishful thinking but a confident truth grounded in God’s character. For those who love Him and are called by Him, every circumstance whether joyful or painful will ultimately be woven into His good plan.

The Greek word for “work together” is synergeō, from which we get the word “synergy.” It pictures different parts working together to produce something greater. By themselves, individual events may seem bitter, confusing, or even harmful, but God in His sovereignty blends them into a masterpiece for our good and His glory.

When we think about health and holiness, this verse takes on a fresh meaning. Many of us carry struggles in our bodies: sickness, genetic weakness, bad habits, or the consequences of poor choices. At times, these can feel discouraging. But Romans 8:28 reminds us that God is able to redeem even these areas. He can take our brokenness and weave it into testimony. He can use our challenges to grow patience, humility, and compassion. He can even transform setbacks into opportunities to draw closer to Him.

Think of Joseph in Genesis. Though betrayed, enslaved, and imprisoned, he later testified: “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Gen. 50:20). In the same way, the enemy may mean to harm us—through illness, temptation, or destructive cultural patterns—but God’s hand is greater. Nothing is wasted in His plan.

This verse also keeps us from despair when progress in health feels slow. A Christian striving to honor God in diet, exercise, or lifestyle may face setbacks, but God sees the bigger picture. Small victories, daily choices, and even failures are being woven together into growth. What matters is continuing to love Him and trust His purpose.

But we must notice the condition: “for those who love God…for those who are called.” The promise is not for everyone indiscriminately. It is for those whose hearts are surrendered to Him. When we align our lives with His purpose, we can rest in the assurance that He is working, even in ways we cannot see.

Today, whatever struggle you may carry—whether in health, habits, or circumstances—remember: God is at work. Trust Him with your body, your mind, and your spirit. Believe that He is weaving your life into something good, even if you cannot yet see the final picture.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the assurance that all things work together for good for those who love You. Help me to trust You with my health, my struggles, and my journey. Teach me to see each step as part of Your purpose, and give me faith to rest in Your goodness. Amen.
