These words were spoken by Jesus on the night before His crucifixion. The disciples were anxious and confused, sensing that change and loss were near. Into their uncertainty, Jesus spoke this promise: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.” He wasn’t simply offering comfort. He was bestowing a gift.
The Greek word for “peace” is eirēnē, which means wholeness, harmony, and restored order. It carries the same depth as the Hebrew shalom: the state of being whole in body, mind, and spirit. Jesus distinguishes His peace from the world’s version. The world offers temporary relief through distraction or control, but His peace is enduring and internal. It does not depend on circumstances; it flows from His presence.
Notice that Jesus says, “My peace I give to you.” This is not peace we create or earn—it is the very peace that filled His own heart as He faced the cross. It is divine, unshakable, and freely given. Through the Holy Spirit, that same peace now resides in every believer.
For biblical health, this truth is profound. Many try to achieve peace through self-care, comfort, or control, but these only touch the surface. True wellness begins when Christ’s peace rules the heart. When His peace fills us, anxiety decreases, sleep deepens, relationships soften, and even the body begins to rest. Scripture and modern science agree: peace within promotes life and stability throughout.
Jesus also gives a command alongside the promise: “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” The verb “let not” implies participation. While His peace is a gift, we must choose to receive and guard it. We do this by keeping our focus on Him (through prayer, gratitude, and obedience) so that fear loses its grip.
For the modern believer, John 14:27 reminds us that peace is not something to chase but Someone to trust. When we stay close to Jesus, His peace becomes our foundation; holding us steady in chaos and calming every storm within.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me Your peace. Teach me to rest in it when fear rises and to trust that Your presence surrounds me. Let Your peace guard my mind, steady my emotions, and bring wholeness to every part of my life. Amen.
