This verse appears before sin entered the world. Adam was placed in the garden not as a slave, but as a steward. God’s command came in a context of abundance, beauty, and provision.
The Hebrew words used here are intentional. “Work” (abad) means to serve or cultivate, while “keep” (shamar) means to guard, watch over, or protect. From the beginning, God designed human life around responsibility, care, and partnership with Him.
This moment matters deeply. Before there was sickness, shame, or struggle, there was stewardship. Adam’s role was not passive enjoyment of God’s gifts, but active care for what God had made. This included the environment around him and, by implication, his own life and strength. God was forming a person capable of sustaining the calling placed on him.
This truth speaks directly into Biblical health. Caring for ourselves is not a modern invention or a cultural trend. It is woven into God’s original design. We honor God when we protect what He entrusts to us, including our bodies, our minds, and our capacity to serve. Neglect is not holiness.
Stewardship is.
This passage reminds us that obedience begins with attentiveness. We are called to guard our hearts, our habits, and our strength so that we remain available to God’s purposes.
Stewardship helps prevent burnout, resentment, and exhaustion. When we ignore the limits God built into us, we often suffer unnecessarily. God does not cause sickness, but ignoring His design can open the door to it.
This verse challenges the idea that caring for the body is optional. Real, God made foods nourish what God created. Ultra processed foods, though convenient, often work against the very life God designed us to sustain. Choosing nourishment, rest, and wise rhythms is not self indulgence. It is faithfulness.
God placed Adam in the garden so he could flourish and fulfill his calling. In the same way, God invites us to care for ourselves so we can live fully, love well, and walk out the destiny He has given us in Christ.
Prayer: Father, thank You for entrusting me with this life and this body. Teach me to care for what You have placed in my hands. Help me steward my health with wisdom, humility, and gratitude. Align my choices with Your design so I may serve You faithfully and walk fully in the purpose You have prepared for me. Amen.
